The Making of ‘Fortune Teller’
May 30th, 2018 - Lucas created a short demo of an idea that he’d been messing around with since his senior year in college (2016). He’s making a lot of words up on the spot to just get a melody down, but you can hear a lot of things that make it into the final version already!
Sept. 17th, 2018 - Lucas brought that idea up during a Nashville writing trip with fellow songwriters Brian Rhea and Benny James. This recording is from the moment the lyrics for the chorus started to form.
Oct. 22nd, 2018 - We used computer-generated instruments to create our first full demo of Fortune Teller. You’ll notice the second verse is missing and Lucas is still figuring out which lyrics go where, but the overall structure of the song is set.
Dec. 9th, 2019 - This is one of our many live production sessions we used to figure out how we wanted the song to sound. Please excuse the poor sound quality and the goofing off at the end… it was a practice after all!
Jan. 15th, 2019 - After all of the practices and meetings, this is what the song sounded like. It wouldn’t change again until after our trip to Nashville in August of 2019. The most interesting difference here is the bridge, which sounds a lot different than it does in the final recording.
Aug 14th, 2019 - This is what we left Nashville with after recording for 4 days straight. It’s difficult to explain how much work was done even after recording to get this song where it is today, but comparing this raw track to the finished version should give you a good idea!
What’s That Sound?
This synth has been in the song since the first demo and in our opinion is one of the defining sounds of the song! Take a listen to how we use it to double the vocal “woahs” in the chorus, to transition between sections, and to fill out the verses!
We really enjoyed creating the huge sound of the drums in the pre-chorus with our mix engineer and producer, Dustin! The sound is actually a mixture of two different drum layers. In this audio file we play them each separately at first, then both together so you can hear how the final effect was created.
